English Language Proficiency (ELP) course
This course is designed to improve communication between and among pilots and air traffic controllers. Equipped with standard phraseology, pilots and air traffic controllers may find that this is inadequate in the proper discharge of their duties specially in times of emergency. It is for this reason that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has mandated all training schools and airlines to train their flight and ground personnel in the six (6) areas of language proficiency namely, FLUENCY, INTERACTION, VOCABULARY, PRONUNCIATION, COMPREHENSION, AND GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES.
The ELP course at Fastlink Aviation runs 100 hours (a requirement by the ICAO) divided into two modules. In both modules, some of the expected student activities include but are not limited to: conversation practice on actual emergency situations, pronunciation drills, group dynamics in addressing problematic aviation-related situations, and completion of relevant worksheets on English language proficiency.
MODULE ONE: Fluency in the English Language
This course runs for forty (40) hours and deals with achieving an immediate level of English language fluency. Topics focus on accent reduction, problematic sounds of English intonation, sentence stress, and diction.
MODULE TWO: Proficiency in English for Aviation
This course runs for sixty (60) hours and is more subject-specific in approach. Grammatical structures common to pilots and air traffic controllers such as but not limited to rendering directions, expressing purpose, rephrasing instructions, articulation intentions and preferences, discussing results and consequences, stating warnings, among others are given particular attention.
The said course offering is in compliance with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) directive that all Philippine pilots shall be required to hold the ELP Level 4 certificate effective March 2011.
